About Us
Founded in 2014 and based in Charleston, South Carolina, Solar Smart LLC develops solar and battery energy storage (BESS) projects — community solar, commercial & industrial solar, and storage — carrying each one from site search and interconnection through financing and commissioning.
Since its inception, Solar Smart and its partners have invested over $55 million in capital to develop and/or construct twelve (12) community solar projects in Massachusetts and Maryland totaling more than 22.7 MW.
Today, Solar Smart is building an AI development platform grounded in that hands-on experience — helping developers, lenders and investors spot risk earlier and move solar + BESS projects to financing with confidence.
OUR HISTORY
A Decade of Solar Development
Solar Smart LLC is founded in Charleston, SC to identify optimal solar ground sites and secure long-term leases with Massachusetts property owners.
Enters an agreement with Clean Energy Collective to sell solar site leases and projects suited for 1 MW community solar in Massachusetts.
Sells its first community solar site lease and project, in Lancaster, MA, followed by four more Massachusetts site leases.
Develops its first project in Wareham, MA and sells it to Nautilus Solar at notice to proceed; sells two more project sites.
Completes development of another project with its EPC partner and sells it to Nautilus; contracts with Tesla (SolarCity) to sell five solar site leases.
Expands into Maryland and New York. Develops and places into service Maryland’s first two community solar projects, totaling over 4 MW.
Invests in engineering and interconnection for the Haverhill, MA project, secures 100+ letters of intent across MA, MD and NY, and builds a five-project pipeline.
Completes development of the Haverhill project — one of the first community solar projects in Massachusetts with battery storage — and sells it to an institutional investor.
Haverhill City Council unanimously supports the Amesbury Line Road array; the Spencer Planning Board approves Solar Smart’s 2 MW solar + storage project.
Secures a landfill solar lease with the Village of Brockport, New York, and advances Spencer through National Grid interconnection studies.
Launches Solar Smart Advisory Services and begins building an AI development platform for solar + BESS projects.
Bringing Spencer to financing and construction, and expanding the advisory practice across MA, MD and NY.

SQUIRREL ISLAND RD., WAREHAM, MA.
This 1.21 MW (AC) Community Solar system is a fixed ground mounted six acre site that is connected to the Eversource Utility electrical grid. Powered by 5,100 solar panels the system will save customers over $5 million during its life and replace the annual electricity needs of 300 homes.

OLD COURT RD., WINDSOR MILLS, MD
This 2.88 MW (AC) Community Solar project was one of the first projects constructed under the Maryland Community Solar initiative. Powered by 11,000 solar panels the system will produce enough power to replace the annual electricity needs of 700 homes in Baltimore County.

Solar Smart cares about the communities we serve. By engaging low-income communities, non-profits, homeowners, businesses and other electricity consumers, Solar Smart develops a better understanding of their needs and priorities. Through this understanding and by working closely with community leaders we are able to invest in local energy systems that create employment, are good for the environment and reduce energy costs by 10% to 30%.
Our goals are simple. To accelerate the adoption of renewable energy, find smarter energy solutions and make electricity available to communities at a lower cost.
